Evaluation:

This project offered a pivotal opportunity to reassess my creative identity and develop a brand that merges personal expression with client-facing functionality. Using my personal artwork allowed me to craft an authentic visual language while learning how to present artwork effectively as products in a digital space.

The visual identity, led by a dark blue palette derived from my landscape photography, aimed to balance earthiness and ethereality in line with the project’s grounding in sublime aesthetics. Motifs such as the Lime Hawk Moth and Ouroboros symbol added layered meaning—referencing the project’s theoretical grounding in the sublime while symbolising transformation and fragility. These motifs poignantly allude to existential themes concerning our relationship with nature in the context of the Anthropocene. The illustrative logo also achieved an effective balance between artistic brand personality and visual simplicity, ensuring it would not overwhelm or compete with the artwork it accompanies.

Future Directions

Had time allowed, I would have created an animated logo for digital use; however, this remains a priority for post-submission development. I also plan to further develop ideas such as the Elemental Series (pg. 61), the Moth Landscape (pg. 95), and the La Calavera Catrina Biodiversity Image (pg. 84), either as expressive digital posters for collaborative campaigns or as emotionally resonant painted artworks.

Having considered artists and designers working with ephemeral media, such as Stephen Gill and Michael Cina, I now recognise that I could have been more experimental in generating outcomes directly influenced by the materiality of nature and transitory processes. Going forward, I hope to explore these approaches more freely—without the time constraints and academic pressures of the MA—and allow the brand to function as a living, evolving entity that adapts in response to my ongoing practice as a lifelong creative journey.

Next Steps:

Web Development

I will need to either build the website myself on WordPress or Wix, or hire a developer. Although the most important pages have been designed, I will complete the final live website based on the below site map. The main web tasks will also include:

  • Mobile optimization (responsive web design and mobile versions)
  • Registered domain name
  • Professional email address associated with the new domain
  • Launch web functionalities such as payment, contact page, and downloadable order form.
Investments:
  • Fine art printer

A professional-grade inkjet printer (Giclée) would be required to provide high quality museum quality prints. This would enable me the freedom to conduct inhouse printing of artworks, as well as branded assets and collateral such as certificates of authenticity for original artworks. This would also enable flexibility with lead times and paper types.

  • Framing

Having previously worked for a fine art framing company (Art Graphics, Bollington), I believe that many customers purchasing fine art prints and original artwork would be willing to pay for professional framing services, including fine art/museum-quality anti-reflective coating and UV protection. However, this would introduce logistical complexity and added costs. Therefore, I would need to conduct further research to determine whether I could offer both framed and unframed options.

Outsourced Print

Out of house printers and manufactures may be required for specialist items such as business cards and physical products such as stationary, textile, homeware etc.

Marketing
  • Social Media

In order to gain new customers and retain existing ones I will need to set up social media channels (facebook, instagram, pinterst). I will also need to post regular content of art production, packaging and user generated content. I may need to invest in scheduling software and courses in order to learn about effective digital marketing for new small businesses.

  • Email Marketing

With my first freelance client being a specialist email marketer (GM.co) I aim to learn as much as possible about email marketing strategy and how it may be used to effectively gain new and repeat orders.

  • Physical Exposure

In order to gain exposure to relevant audiences I could gift or provide discounted artworks to organisations. For example, the falconry centre had a gift shop which sold local artwork. This would be a great opportunity to showcase my traditional artwork skills, as well as my graphic design skills through a range of printed pattern designs on relevant products (stationery and homewares etc).

Legal Requirements:
  • Register Assets:

The logo and other assets will be registered in order to protect my intellectual property rights and mitigate any copyright issues.

  • Taxes and accounts

Finances and accounting are areas of weakness for me; therefore, I intend to hire an accountant initially to provide additional security and ensure accurate financial management.
